| The Bracknell
Blizzard Ice Hockey Club came into existence due to a
growing number of people who had watched the Bracknell
Bees or other local sides and had always wanted to play
the game but never had the chance. In 2005 Wendy Brown, David
Lawrence and Chris Orritt set the club up and managed to get Mike
Holt, Carl Hyland and Dave Johnston to be coaches, however the
latter remained at the club for only a few months before moving
on.The first official Blizzard training session was on 10th
December 2005 at JNLC Bracknell.
The club is self funding with those who play paying to do so in
both games and training, however the club is always looking for
sponsorship oppertunities.
It wasn’t long before word had rapidly spread
that there was a new ‘learn to play’ club in Bracknell
and training sessions regularly had 30 people attending, which
was a mixture of some people who had played before but the majority
were new to the sport. The club remained un-registered for the
first year but by October 2006 played it’s first game against
the newly formed WD1 Bracknell Firebees winning 13 - 5. Soon after
this, the club applied to the English Ice Hockey Association
(EIHA) Rec section to become a registered recreational
club opening up many opportunities to play against other similar
teams across the country. Initially 32 people registered themselves
to the team allowing them to play in the EIHA games.
The club played it’s first EIHA registered games on 17th
and 18th March 2007 against the other Bracknell Rec side the Bracknell
B52’s.
Despite losing heavily in both games, the hunger remained and
the club earned it’s first ever registered EIHA win on 23rd
June 2007 against the Medway Madness by a score line of 4 - 3
which was particularly impressive as with 20 minutes to go Medway
were ahead 3 - 1.
In September 2007 the club entered the first Southern
Conference (run by the Medway Madness) with 5 other local
sides however, despite being the only club to finish all 10 of
it’s games, the conference folded in May 2008 due to teams
not fulfilling fixtures leaving the club to just playing challenge
matches. The club structure changed in April 2008 to allow for
management and coaching roles to be clearly defined to ensure
that the club had a stable future that would allow for further
development. It was at this point that Michael Wale (Mini) came
on board as the new head coach with Mike Holt and Carl Hyland
supporting him. In May/June 2008 the club played it’s first
overseas games when invited to play the Rhine Ice Pirates in Cologne,
Germany.
This has lead to a good relationship building between the 2 clubs
in which it is hoped that future games will be arranged on both
sides of the English Channel.
In January 2009 having not played
a competitive match for over a year, the club entered the first
Thames Valley Cup but unfortunately were placed in a
tough group (with the B52’s and the Met Police) and failed
to make it past the group stage despite some good performances.
Spurred on by this the club decided to try and re-start the Southern
Conference and in April 2009 Chris Orritt had managed to get 4
other teams to compete.
The Conference was a success on an organisational and team level
with every game being completed and the Blizzard reaching the
playoff final narrowly losing out by an aggregate score of 12
- 9 to the Guildford Smoke. In 2010 the club went one stage better
by winning the Southern Conference group stage and playoff competitions.
In December 2010 the club will be 5
years old and will continue to go from strength to strength.
The club is entering the 4th Conference in 2011 with more teams
and is looking to defend it's titles this time with a mixture
of those beginners from the start and people who have played
previously who have joined the club.
